What happened

A polished filing. Invented evidence.

In Mata v. Avianca, the court found that a filing relied on nonexistent cases and that the lawyers continued to defend the material after its accuracy was challenged. On June 22, 2023, it imposed a joint $5,000 penalty on the lawyers and their firm, along with notification requirements.

Why it matters

The consequence travels beyond the answer.

An invented citation can become a lawyer’s argument and a client’s case. The problem is not whether a document looks finished. It is whether the work deserves the reliance people place on it.
